North Carolina Interesting People

Andy Samuel Griffith was born into poverty on June 1, 1926 in Mount Airy.
Andy was an American actor, writer, television producer and Grammy Award winning Southern gospel singer. He is best known for his lead roles in "The Andy Griffith Show", (1960-1968) and "Matlock", (1986-1995).
Andy began his love of music at a very young age. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949 with a bachelor of music degree....after originally starting out studying to be a Moravian preacher.

Duke University

In 1838, a group of Methodists and Quakers founded Brown's Schoolhouse in present day Trinity. It was a private subscription school. In 1841, North Carolina issued a charter and the school was renamed the Union Institute Academy. In 1851, it became Normal College and in 1859, Trinity College.
In 1892, tobacco and electrical industrialists Julian S. Carr and Washington Duke were wealthy and respected men. Mr. Carr donated land and Mr. Duke donated financial backing for moving the school to Durham. The private research school was renamed one more time in 1924 to Duke University.

New York Fashion Week started in 1943. It began as an effort to draw attention away from French fashion during WWII when fashion "insiders" were unable to travel to Paris for the French fashion shows. This event is held in February and September and is one of the 4 (Paris, Milan and London) major fashion weeks.

New York Interesting People

Lucille Desiree Ball was born in Jamestown, N.Y. on August 6th, 1911.  Lucy was an American actress, comedienne, model, film and television producer. She was the star of her own sitcoms. Lucy was considered the most popular and influential stars in the United States during her lifetime. In 1962 Lucille became the first woman to run a major television studio, "Desilu".

Mary Jane West, best known as Mae West, was born in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NYC on August 17th, 1893. West was an American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, comedienne and most notably a sex symbol. Mae West's career spanned 7 decades and she was considered one of the most controversial movie stars of her time.

Who doesn't love cheesecake?
"NY style" cheesecake differs from other cheesecakes primarily because of the use of heavy cream or sour cream. When using sour cream, it is mixed with vanilla and sugar and applied as the top layer to an already baked and cooled cake. The cheesecake is then baked again.

In 1885, a carpenter and cough syrup manufacturer in Le Roy NY, named Pearle Wait, bought the formula for a powdered gelatin...he and his wife added fruit flavoring to the powder and gave Jell-O it's name in 1897.

Vassar College

Founded in 1861 in Poughkeepsie, this private college began as a women's only college. In 1969, the college became coeducational. Vassar spans over 1,000 acres and has more than 200 species of trees, a native plant and ecological preserve. It's library has one of the largest undergraduate library collections in the United States.
