Thomas Green Clemson passed away in 1888, leaving the bulk of his estate for the establishment of a college. Clemson University was founded in 1889. The first football team was started in 1896.
Founded in 1770 the College of Charleston (formerly Charleston College) is the 13th oldest institute of higher education in the nation. The college's Departments of Political Science and Communication host "The Bully Pulpit Series"...the guestlist in 2008 included presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama.
