 Vermont Interesting People

I'm changing things around today...two of my featured people were NOT born in Vermont, but I feel they have been instrumental in Vermont's history.

Bernard Sanders was born in Brooklyn N.Y. on September 8, 1941. Captivated by rural life, Bernie moved to Vermont in 1968. He started his political career in VT in 1971.

Jake Burton Carpenter was born in Manhattan on April 29, 1954. He was one of the original snowboard creators and manufacturers. Jake has been credited with "creating" the snowboarding lifestyle, sport and culture. Jake passed away on November 20, 2019 from cancer.

Patrick Joseph Leahy was born in Montpelier on March 31, 1940 (Happy Birthday!). He is the only democrat Vermont has ever elected to the U.S. Senate. The senator is VT's longest serving senator, having served for 8 terms to date. Senator Leahy is a huge Batman fan!

The University of Vermont and Sports

I try not to feature the same Esty shops more than once...but, when I originally featured John Stoeckley's print illustration of Vanderbilt University (3/2/21), I told him that I looked forward to when he did one of UVM. Well, here it is!

The University of Vermont was originally founded as a private college in 1791. They hired their first president in 1800, he was the only teacher for 7 years!

During the 1930s - 1960s the Civilian Conservation Corps cut ski trails throughout the various mountains in the state.

Vermont Foods

A good way to supplement their income in the winter/spring, Vermont farmers would (many still do) make and sell their maple syrup. Vermont's school breaks in February were primarily set for kids to be able to help with the sugaring.

 Vermont Historical

The Battle of Bennington was fought on August 16, 1777. American soldiers from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont's Green Mountain Boys defeated some of the British, Hessian and mixed group of soldiers who had been sent to raid their supplies. The battle actually took place in New York, 10 miles across the border from Bennington.

 Welcome to Vermont!

Oh my goodness! I can't believe we're finally here! Before we begin, I must make a "disclaimer"...(not wanting to be the next Hilaria), I was born in Canada (first generation) and moved to Stowe, Vermont when I was 7. I have little recollection of living in Canada, Vermont has always felt like home and where I feel my best!

Originally a sovereign state from 1777-1791, Vermont was the 14th to be admitted into the union on March 4, 1791.

I remember visiting Temple Square in Salt Lake City, another trip; camping in Bryce Canyon...or was it Zion? Beautiful! Let's wrapped up this trip, 'cause we're headed to Vermont tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Utah Foods

Another "who knew?" moment...the people of Utah eat twice as much lime Jell-O than anywhere else in the world. Lime Jell-O is the official state snack.

Originally introduced in the 1950's by a restaurateur concocting a dip for french fries, you can find different versions of Fry Sauce (ketchup, mayonnaise,...) throughout the state.

Utah Historical

With it's abundance of water from the rivers and timber from the trees, the Wasatch Range has been drawing people to the area since the first white settlers. Still as popular today, 85% of Utah's population lives within 15 miles of the western side of the Wasatch Range.

Goodbye Texas!

Wow! So much history in Texas, so many interesting people born there....

My husband and I flew to Texas a few years ago to visit our daughter and her family who lived there at the time. We enjoyed a day in San Antonio...the river walk, the missions and SeƱor Veggie! All the Texans we met in our travels were so friendly and so proud of their state! Let's grab some souvenirs and head to Utah!

Born in San Antonio on April 26, 1933, Carol Creighton Burnett has been entertaining us for over 70 years. Her alcoholic parents divorced when she young, leaving her to be raised by her grandmother. Her love and closeness to her grandmother remained throughout her grandmother's life...Carol's "ear tugging" at the end of her shows was a sign to her grandmother that all was well and that she loved her.
