 Born in Virginia

Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was born in Richmond on July 10, 1943. Arthur had many "firsts" as an African American professional tennis player. He was the first African American to ever be selected for US Davis Cup Team and the only African American man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US and the Australian Open. Arthur died from an AIDS (blood transfusion) related pneumonia on February 6, 1993.

Born in Meherrin on April 15, 1933, Roy Linwood Clark was destined to be a musician! Roy's father was a semi-professional musician who played banjo, fiddle and guitar. Roy's mother played the piano. Clark played banjo, guitar and mandolin...but enjoyed guitar the best. Roy Clark died on November 15, 2018.
