 Washington Historical

November 29, 1847, members of the Cayuse Indian tribe murdered 13 people, including missionary Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa. The Cayuse believed that Whitman, a physician who had been in charge of their medical care, had poisoned and killed 200 members of their tribe. The Cayuse had actually died from the measles epidemic at that time.
