Pennsylvania Foods

Founded by Milton Hershey in 1900, Hershey's Chocolate Company was more than just chocolate. Starting with 30 acres in the middle of dairy farmland, Milton began a chocolate company that would grow into an entire town for his factory workers and their families.

In 1933, The Philly Cheesesteak was born out of boredom! Bored with their sandwich cart's hot dogs and fishcakes, 2 Italian brothers came up with the idea of cooking thin slices of steak with onions and putting them on a bun....

Pennsylvania Historical

Originally made in England and shipped to Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell has become the United States' sign of  independence. When it arrived in 1752, the tower where the bell was to be hung was not yet complete. The bell was temporarily mounted on a platform so it could be sounded. The rim of the bell cracked on the first strike. The bell was then melted down and recast by local founders. In March of 1753 a public celebration was held for the sounding of the recast bell. When it was struck, the sound was horrible. The bell went back to the founders where it was recast with more metal. In 1777, fearing the British would steal the bell and melt it down for ammunition, the bell was moved and hidden under the floorboards of a church until 1778.

Hello Pennsylvania!

Pennsylvania was the 2nd to enter the Union on December 12, 1787. The land was granted to William Penn in 1681 as repayment for debt (owed to William's father) by King Charles II of England. The King named this grant Pennsylvania (in honor of William's father, Admiral Penn) and Sylvania, which means "from the forest".

 Goodbye Oregon...for now!

Wow! I learned so much about this state. I loved the history of the state, the mountains, the ocean, the people! The Etsy vendors that I featured were awesome in their responses to being on my blog. The history of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce was powerful and emotional. I have always wanted to visit the Pacific Northwest and now...even more so! Cheers to a New Year!

 Oregon's Interesting People

In 1873 the Federal Government negotiated with Chief Joseph (Wallowa band) of the Nez Perce Tribe, "giving" them rights to their own land in the Wallowa Valley. In 1873, the Federal Government reneged on it's deal. The Wallowa were forced off their land to a reservation in Idaho where the rest of the Nez Perce had been relocated. Having no choice but to move his tribe, the Chief began their journey to Idaho peacefully. Their journey ended 3 months later, over 1,100 miles away (Nez Perce War) with the US Army capturing Chief Joseph and what was left of  his followers.

Willamette University is the oldest university in the Western United States. "Oregon Institute" was founded in 1842 by a missionary for the purpose of educating the fellow missionaries' children. The school's name was changed to "Wallamet University" in 1852. In 1859, the school's celebrated it's first graduate; a female with her degree being...Mistress of English Literature. The school changed the spelling of it's name in 1870.

University of Oregon
Established in 1872 the school was able to open it's door in 1876 with the help of the Eugene residents fundraising to help buy the land that the school was to be built on. In 1881 the school had severe financial woes and were almost forced to close their doors. In 1883 their first benefactor, Henry Villard (President of Northern Pacific Railways), paid off the school's debt and gave them a $50,000 endowment.

Oregon Foods

Who knew? Oregon has the ideal climate for hazelnut trees. 99% of the United States hazelnuts are grown in Oregon. The first "culturerized" tree was planted in 1858 and in 1903 the first commercial orchard was started. In 1989, the hazelnut officially became the state nut.

The Oregon Frozen Foods Co. was founded in 1952 by 2 brothers and their brother-in-law. The food company produced and sold frozen corn and french fries. In 1953 the trio came up with the idea of using the leftover potatoes from the french fry production and....the Tater Tot was born! In 1960, the group built a second plant in Idaho where some of their potato fields where located and they changed the name to Ore-Ida.

Hello Oregon!

Long before Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition to search for a northwest passage from Missouri, Oregon's Pacific Coast had been explored by European traders in the mid 1500's. Oregon was the 33rd to enter the Union on Feburary 14, 1859.
