Established in 1872 the school was able to open it's door in 1876 with the help of the Eugene residents fundraising to help buy the land that the school was to be built on. In 1881 the school had severe financial woes and were almost forced to close their doors. In 1883 their first benefactor, Henry Villard (President of Northern Pacific Railways), paid off the school's debt and gave them a $50,000 endowment.
