 Tennessee Historical

Tennessee's nickname is "The Volunteer State". They originally earned this name during the War of 1812, when many of the men from Tennessee volunteered to fight. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, Tennessee was asked to send 2,800 soldiers...they sent 30,000.

Hello Tennessee!

My husband and I have driven to Tennessee the past 2 years to visit our daughter and her family that live there. Due to travel restrictions...I didn't think I was going to Tennessee this year, but here we are!

On June 1, 1796, the State of Tennessee was the 16th to enter the union. In 1861 at the start of the American Civil War, Tennessee left the union to join the Confederacy. They were re-admitted after the war.

Goodbye South Dakota

It's been a fun trip to South Dakota. In the late 80's, I did visit Mt. Rushmore, bought a Black Hills Rose Gold ring and drove through the Badlands...seems like a lifetime ago!

 South Dakota Born

Cheryl Jean Stoppelmoor was born on July 12, 1951 in Huron. Cheryl Ladd became a household name in the 1970's for her role as Kris Munroe in Charlie's Angels.





A former professional golfer, Marlene Hagge was born in Eureka on February 16, 1934. She was one of the original 13 founders of the LPGA in 1950. Marlene won the LPGA Championship in 1956.

 South Dakota Sports

Dakota Agricultural College was founded 140 years ago on February 21, 1881. It's name was changed a few times but in 1962 it was re-named South Dakota State University. The university participates in the NCAA Division 1 athletics.

South Dakota Foods

At one time there were as many as 60 million bison roaming the Great Plains. By the time South Dakota became a state in 1889, bison were almost extinct due to hunting and disease. Bison have since been re-introduced to South Dakota in order to re-establish and expand the herds.





South Dakota is one of the United States' largest producer of wheat.

 South Dakota Historical

Wounded Knee Massacre began on the morning of December 29, 1890. Due to the unrest from the murder of Chief Sitting Bull, the United States Army was sent to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to disarm and remove the Lakota. There are different versions of what happened next, but the cavalry (490 men) ended up shooting and killing over (mostly disarmed) 250 Lakota men, women and children.

I had a great visit here in the south! One of the interesting things I learned...Clemson University was an all-white male, military school until 1955.

She is an American chemist, former USAF colonel and a retired astronaut who completed 2 Space Shuttle missions. Catherine Grace Coleman was born in Charleston on December 14, 1960.

Vanna Marie Rosich, aka Vanna White was born on February 18, 1957 near North Myrtle Beach. She became the hostess of Wheel of Fortune of December 13, 1982.

 South Carolina Colleges & Sports 

Thomas Green Clemson passed away in 1888, leaving the bulk of his estate for the establishment of a college. Clemson University was founded in 1889. The first football team was started in 1896.







Founded in 1770 the College of Charleston (formerly Charleston College) is the 13th oldest institute of higher education in the nation. The college's Departments of Political Science and Communication host "The Bully Pulpit Series"...the guestlist in 2008 included presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama.

South Carolina is the 2nd largest producer of peaches (California #1).






Referred to as "Rockahomine" by the Native Americans, Grits were introduced to the European explorers in 1584.

 South Carolina Historical

Opening on February 2, 1736, The Dock Street Theatre was the first building (in America) built solely for theatrical performances. The building burned down in 1740 and was rebuilt as a hotel in 1809. The City of Charleston acquired the property in 1935, and restored the building back to a theatre.





The Charleston Library Society was founded on December 28, 1748, giving Charleston access to Great Britain's latest publications.

May 23, 1788, South Carolina was the 8th to enter the Union. They were the first to vote to succeed the Union and did so on December 20, 1860. They were readmitted on June 25, 1868 after the end of the Civil War.
