South Dakota Foods
At one time there were as many as 60 million bison roaming the Great Plains. By the time South Dakota became a state in 1889, bison were almost extinct due to hunting and disease. Bison have since been re-introduced to South Dakota in order to re-establish and expand the herds.

Wounded Knee Massacre began on the morning of December 29, 1890. Due to the unrest from the murder of Chief Sitting Bull, the United States Army was sent to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to disarm and remove the Lakota. There are different versions of what happened next, but the cavalry (490 men) ended up shooting and killing over (mostly disarmed) 250 Lakota men, women and children.

Thomas Green Clemson passed away in 1888, leaving the bulk of his estate for the establishment of a college. Clemson University was founded in 1889. The first football team was started in 1896.

Opening on February 2, 1736, The Dock Street Theatre was the first building (in America) built solely for theatrical performances. The building burned down in 1740 and was rebuilt as a hotel in 1809. The City of Charleston acquired the property in 1935, and restored the building back to a theatre.

July 3, 1878, George Michael Cohan was born to "touring, stage actors" parents. He learned to play the violin by 10 yrs old and was performing with his parents and sister by the time he was 11. George was a man of many talents. He was a singer, actor and dancer. He was also a composer and lyricist, writing some of America's favorite songs....I am a Yankee Doodle Boy, Over There, You're a Grand Old Flag and more.

I found out that R.I. has had a lot of "firsts". Polo was played (near Newport) for the first time in U.S. in 1876. The first U.S. Open Golf Tournament was played at the Newport Country Club in 1895. The first National Lawn Tennis Championship was played at the Newport Casino in 1881.

Del's Lemonade was first introduced (by pushcart) in 1948 in Cranston, Rhode Island. It's founder, Angelo Delucia used the original lemonade recipe that his father had brought to the U.S. from Italy.
