 South Carolina Historical

Opening on February 2, 1736, The Dock Street Theatre was the first building (in America) built solely for theatrical performances. The building burned down in 1740 and was rebuilt as a hotel in 1809. The City of Charleston acquired the property in 1935, and restored the building back to a theatre.

The Charleston Library Society was founded on December 28, 1748, giving Charleston access to Great Britain's latest publications.
